Vote For Brunnie =^..^=

Hi friends, I have entered a pic of my much missed little fur-boy Brunnie in a spring photo comp on Facebook & the Love Cats website. Brunnie loved the garden & the pic I submitted with him between the daffis is one of my favourites.

Click on this link to Love Cats if you would like to vote for Brunnie. To vote you rate the picture out of 5 paws. HB & I greatly appreciate it & those of you from Facebook like our dear Shez who have voted so far. He may not win, but it is nice to have little Brunnie out in cyber space getting some votey loving.

On another furry matter - HB is not sure whether he wants to be named after a pencil or not..... he is sleeping on that decision (again).

There hasn't been much sewing happening this week. I have had three very early nights trying to get rid of the last few coughs & sore throats of this cold & been MYOBing up a storm in order to hand over the treasurers role I do for our Cali club next week.

One stuffie has been finished though, 1 more is ready to be stuffed & the rest are by the sewing machine waiting to have their backings put on.

I also have some Easter baskets to sew later today & my Xmas bauble to finish knitting tonight while Midsummer Murders is on. If you are looking for some last minute easy Easter baskets to make, this tutorial from A Spoonful of Sugar Designs is what I am using & they say they take about 15 minutes each to make. A great idea for any occasion, just change the ribbon to suit. Check out their latest post for Easter Basket cupcakes too (& invite me around if you make some!).

Pic from A Spoonful of Sugar to direct you to the tutorial only.

Here's mine ready to sew. I'm thinking of using invisible thread so I don't have big coloured stitches through the ribbon - decisions, decisions... Naturally I didn't go with pretty white bags, lots of colour & I am loving the lime green as always. The ribbon is the Spotlight Easter specials so not much selection & couldn't get my hands on any woven ribbon in time. Never mind, these will look cute & hold a few choccies as well.

After Easter when my Let's Celebrate Swap parcel is with my swap partner Glenys, then I will be able to show you a couple of recent projects completed as well as what I receive.

Happy Sunday

Dining With Brunnie

Hi Friends, Brunnie here!

Muma's neglecting you all badly so I just wanted to tell you we think of you often & miss you all heaps, but mum's working hard & we will be back sewing & blogging soon.

I might have some more news soon but tonight I just wanted to share with you the wonderful news that I had my favourite morney for dinner....

Muma said that somehow she thinks you would already nose about that! ????

My brother Hun-bun is well, but he freaked muma out tonight when she got home by pretending he was a V8 Supercar & running fast laps of the house making brrrrmmmm, brrrrrrmmmmm noises. Now he is parked up on the couch waiting for refuelling.

Purrs to you all

Oh What A Day.....

Thanks to everyone for your kind & funny comments for Brun's 20th birthday. With his little health hiccups in the last year & my having to come to the realisation that I will lose him sooner rather than later now, this as been an occasion we have both had our hearts set on reaching. To share it with so many friends, both online, at work & home, has been wonderful & very touching. Thank you also for indulging me on my blog & letting me share my obsession with my furbabies, especially my dear sweet old man Brun. It's bizzaire to think I was at the tender age of 25 when he knocked on the door at about 6 weeks of age. I feel like we have grown up together.

10 minutes after an official portrait I always pose for a better picture, playing with mum's head again!

Brun got a special present from his Facebook friend Horse (whose muma works with me - for two more days only - boo hoo Mich!). Horse was kind enough to send Brun a pack of his favourite sardines in tomato sauce. Isn't that just so special! We are saving them for a Friday night footy treat, the kitty version of pie & sauce at the footy.

Oh & yes, Hun-bun did get a share of cake but as he was late to rise it was after the photos were taken. Then I abandoned the poor little birthday boy & went to work. He gave me the sad eyes but it was from the bed, on his rug with his electric blanket on two so don't feel too sorry for him. Don't feel too sorry for me either, it was off to do some shopping for little gifts then to host a Baby Shower at work for our gorgeous Regina who is expecting Baby Girl no. 2 in early June. It was very nice of our boss David to not only let us have the party during work but to also be the only man attending the baby shower with 12 of us pink obsessed females.

Our clever little Vickie took our $$$ & turned them in to a huge nappy cake containing nappies, wraps, clothes, shoes, toys, creams & the lovely pink teddy Rosie. Doesn't it look fantastic all wrapped in cellophane & a pink bow. I made the lemon & white crocheted blanket but forgot to take a proper photo of it. Nice & snuggly for a winter baby.

Last night it was the monthly WA Quilters Guild sewing night too. It was the Australia's Biggest Quilting Bee night, so there were stalls raising money for the Cancer Council. How can anyone say NO to picking out a few books to bring home for a cost of $6 when the money goes to such a necessary cause.

I felt so virtuous as I took a bag full of fabric to donate to our community quilts table too. It raises money to pay for the wadding & backing for donated quilts of which this group makes many each year for local hospitals & charities. I also helped more ; ) by buying the little stack of fabrics above for $5.

By the time I got home at 10pm, a cup of tea & a huggle with Hun-bun, snuggle with Brun, the electric blanket & a book were forefront in my mind. I was just finishing off the tea & a high pitch squealing scared a few years off my life expectancy. It was coming from the sink so I spent 10 minutes peering down the plug hole, running water, peering, more water & it stopped. Half an hour later while in bed the noise started again, not so much squealing now, more warbling. So back to the plug hole. I was asked today 'Did I think there was a frog down there?' I definately thought there was something down there!

As I mentioned I am not the best housekeeper. I had cooked food for the baby shower that morning & left without time to do the dishes. I had got home late that night with still no intention of cleaning up. After moving a few utensils around in the sink I found my shrieking culprit.

It was Brun's singing candle. It had rolled from the side of the sink into the cutlery there & got wet. So how do you stop a singing candle from squealing out it's outrage at being wet? I tried wiping it, wrapping it in a teatowel in the hope it muffled the noise & thought of taking it to the wheely bin but figured it would wake up the neighbors. The solution was not pretty. I ended up having to drown it & put it out of it's misery.

What a great day!

Happy days

Where Does The Time Go....

Nine days without a post & the days have just rushed by. I seem to be achieving things in other areas but blogging & machine sewing has missed out. It has been a good start to the year at work, busy but plowing through things. There is great excitement as we are expecting a new baby girl (at work that is - Regina may be the mother, but it is now a group thing). Now we know it is a girl expected in June, baby gift making plans can be made.

On the home front, I am a terrible pack rat (thanks mum!) so slowly & quietly I have started having a bit of a sort - a box for Freecycle, a box for the op shop, a useful box to keep & another box to keep 'just cause'. It's the 'just because it might be needed one day' or' just because its too good to get rid of' or 'just because it has emotional ties ' boxes that are the problem. As long as more is going out than coming in then I am having a win.

Little Brun & Honey have to sort through their toy boxes too & donate some to the kitties that don't have forever homes yet. Little Brun is very well after his operation with the hydration & antibiotics resulting in him not looking a day over 110 in cat years any more, not bad for a boy who will be 140 on April. He enjoyed a bit of ice cream during recuperation but decided while mint choc chip may be muma's favorite flavour, he prefers vanilla.
I'm licking not poking my tongue out at muma

On the hand sewing front I am making progress. I now have 3 blocks finished from the Some Kind of Wonderful Stitch A Long for the My Favorite Things quilt with one more just needing the words stitched on. My green suitcase needs travel destinations so rather than use what Anni loves I'll put my own favourite places. Another block features 3 patty cakes & I am going to try drawing a nice big slab of cake instead to substitute as my favourite sweet thing. It was a sad day to learn I'm not that good at needleturn applique but by the time the 24 blocks are done, I will be a lot better at it than when I started. I hope to do some of the piecing that goes between the applique blocks on Sunday, can't wait to see them put together.

I am slowly entering the world of free motion quilting to satisfy that goal this year. So far I am still at the drawing stage & watching as many videos on the subject as possible. However, a stack of quilt sandwiches are made & the darning foot needs to go on real soon so I can put thread to fabric like a real FM quilter.

My mug cosy for the Keeping It Cosy Challenge on the Facebook page 'I Don't Have A Problem, I Have A Well Rounded Fabric Stash' page is now done. It doesn't photograph well on the mug so here's the result flat. Sorry, I have stretched the truth a wee bit too - I have never met a jelly bean I didn't love!

And finally, another new quilty area currently being pursued. I go to a Thursday quilting group here in Perth & last year four of us brought copies of Electric Quilt 7 design software. Mine went untouched until last Thursday when the four of us met to start our self-training in digital quilt design. We covered the basics on making a quilt from the blocks already contained in EQ7, assigning fabrics to the pieces, getting the fabric requirements list & ending up with a personalised block quilt.

Today three of us met again & we worked together (one on keyboard, one online & one reading from the Drawing book) to draw our own quilt from scratch. We used as inspiration a pattern Marie had that she wanted to extend & change to fit a King Size bed, so drew the blocks, changed dimensions & coloured in fabrics to match those she wanted to use & added borders. It was fun to do all this, then to redesign, change sizes & fabrics so that we got something that was possible with the fabric amounts on hand, to match the existing bedroom decor & so all the pieces were straight forward to cut & not all 1/8th measurements . It was brilliant & together we prevailed & tamed the scary software dragon. Now to fit in time to do some real designing for fabric I have on hand. First I might see if I can design something spiffy for my Ruby layer cakes & yardage that is better than what I have in mind already. That fabric really is too nice to cut up small so some big blocks would be pretty.

The only sad news at the moment is that after a month, my Secret Garden fabric I ordered from the USA (Etsy) for the SewHappyGeek quilt a long hasn't shown up. So block 5 is now released & the blocks uploaded to the Flickr group are amazing & varied but I haven't started yet. I picked some fabric from my stash last night to use but will wait one more day to see if it shows up tomorrow as it was so pretty. Fingers crossed!

Now I just need to put aside some time to read blogs & find out what you have all been up to!

Happy stitching

Brutus is HOME!!

Little Brutus finally had his surgery today after a days delay. It was decided yesterday to put him on fluids for 24 hours & postpone his surgery 1 day. Of course, that meant an automatic lengthening of my anxiety & a night at the vets for little Brun. Every time I turned around last night my little boy wasn't there & after 20 years of having my little shadow if felt very strange & totally wrong. My darling Hun-bun was around but he is a very self sufficent boy so he makes random visits but isn't always by my side like little Brun.

The vet rang at 1pm to say all was well & the operation was quick & straight forward & little Brutus had woken up naturally. He stayed on fluids until 6pm to aid the anesthetic leaving his body & then at 6.45pm I finally got to see my boy. Brun's vet at Vet West Whitford City (gratuitous plug as I love these people) is called Rudolph, a new one to us as evidently the female vets on shift today that we have seen before didn't want to operate on such an old cat (who has such a sooky muma) - can't blame them! He went through so many details of little Brun's tests with me which was wonderful & showed he is quite a healthy old cat. We will keep an eye on his kidney function but that's to be expected in such an old fella.

So now little Brun is home. (big sigh) He is a bit unsteady on his legs, has teary black eyes but was desperate for a snack. Now he sits on the carpet watching me type & making chirping noises so I give him a pat every few minutes, as he does nearly every day of his life. It is so good to have life as we know it restored in the Quiltkitty household!

I can't express how thankful I am to have friends such as those through the blog, on Facebook, my 'old' friends & workmates who have shown such kindness & caring of me & the little fella during our ordeal. Thank you for the supportive emails, messages & talks (& to Michelle for the chocolates!). It all helped immensely. I am thankful for every one of you. xx Big purrs to you all from little Brun too.

May this bless you all!

Now on the agenda for tonight is to go spoil my boy with non-stop attention & cuddles.

Big purrs

Little Brun's Operation

Well the time is come for Brutus (my Little Brun) to have an operation to have a tooth removed. If you remember a post last month where his face was swollen up all wonky, well it has happened again. After my observations the vet has no doubt it is an eye tooth that needs removing.

The vet last month stated that at his age having an anesthetic is something he is unlikely to survive. The vet this time figures it's a 50 / 50 chance & they will take every precaution, starting with a light dose, only keeping him under for as little time as possible etc.

In little Brun's favour is that after the last lot of antibiotics he has got a new lease on life, put on 300 grams (now 3.4 kgs - little old man) & is looking quite healthy. His appetite is constant & it's all in one end & out the other. So all these factors add up to a healthy kitty who should survive careful surgery.

Napping beside muma Wednesday night

Every time he turns around at the moment I have a camera in his face not that pictures will be any consolation if the worst does happen. So we have had a week of waiting while the antibiotic injection works again & he is at his fittest for Monday 9th. I take him in on my way to work at 8.15am (my first day back & boy am I going to be a great employee that day!), he then goes on a drip for maximum hydration & goes in to surgery about 11.30am. Soon after I should get a call to say tooths out, all went well, kitties awake & not very happy. I can then pick him up after work so they have many hours to check on him. There will be tears in the vet clinic when he is back in his muma's arms & that will be even before I pay the account.

The boys obviously know it is a serious situation as the last 2 nights little Brun has sat on the couch with me while I stitch & last night his little 'big' brother Hun-bun came up for a cuddle too then slept on the carpet at our feet. A change of behaviour for both of them that is freaking me out but hoping it's just because they can sense my nervousness.

Regardless of the outcome we three are very grateful that little Brun celebrated his 20th Christmas this year, that the tooth isn't giving him pain or stopping him eat and that we have had most of the last two weeks all together.

So I know God may be eyeing up my old kitty & thinking it is time for the old boy to rest awhile in my mum's arms but I ask please let him rest awhile longer in his muma's arms instead. Funnily enough, little Brun didn't like my mum picking him up even though she was as cat obsessed as me. She used to get quite upset & ask why I could just sling him over my arm & carry him around for ages with him totally relaxed & yet with her he didn't tolerate longer than about a minute. It's just because I'm his muma & he loves me as much as I love him.

He knocked specifically on our door when he was about 6 weeks old & walked in, did a big climb up on to the couch, sat on my knee, purred & has never left since. So the bond is a strong one both ways. For many years he was an only kitty too so we rely on one & other. So I am hoping God & my mum will hold Brun tight as he goes through the surgery but then give him back for awhile longer. It's a lot to ask for a cat of almost 20 but he is still loving life & his brother & I are still loving him.

So Monday please send healing vibes, prayers & love to my little kitty as he jumps this next hurdle in his long, happy & much loved life.

Machine Quilting Online Course

First an update - thanks for the lovely comments & emails re my 'little man' Brutus. It looks like the news is all good & maybe he just had an abscess on his face. The swelling is reducing along with his lion looks & his eye has gone back to oval rather than round which is good as it was very freaky to look at.

Sticking so close to home & being a purrer not a fighter in his later years it has been a long time since he has suffered an abscess. Maybe he & his little 'big' brother got a little boisterous in one of their play fights & he got a nick on his little face. So at the moment no surgery or growths to worry about - yippee! He is currently having a nice nap on the bed, electric blanket on 1, in the far corner trying to get as far as possible away from the ducted air-conditioning while I try to sit under a vent to avoid the 33 degrees + Perth is having again today.

So back to the Machine Quilting Course mentioned in the heading. I would love to be able to finish my smaller items myself, like table runners, wall hanging etc but even after doing a 3 hour group workshop just don't feel confident enough to do so. I keep telling myself to practice but like most things, it is when I have a postal deadline that I suddenly want to be able to finish a project with some semi-professional looking machine quilting & can't.

So when an email from Craftsy popped up in my inbox for an online course at half price I decided to check it out. There looks to be about 5 hours of online video that I can go back to time & time again as well as access to the teacher Wendy Butler Berns & an online forum. All this for $29.99 USD.

It's the fact I can go back as many times as I like, repeat sections or the whole lot until I am confident that gives me hope this might work for me. So this is my plan for over the Christmas break. My company closes for 2.5 weeks so on a regular basis it will be aircon on, fabric I no longer adore sandwiched & ready to destroy, machine ready, bobbins filled & away we go. If I can produce one little mug rug in that time with machine quilting I am proud to show you all then it will be time & money well spent. I know I am not alone in this phobia so check out the course preview by clicking on the link above.

I've had a bummer of a week! I've done my civic duty doing four days of jury duty but while the process was interesting the actual case was my worst nightmare. Even the judge said it was the worst of cases - multiple child abuse charges over four victims, the earliest 50 years ago, the latest 26 years ago, lots of detailed testimony from the women involved who at the time were between 5 - 11 years of age, an 84 year old defendant with only his wife to testify for him and no other evidence either way other than police and their interview videos. Fortunately the interviews were damning although the defendant denied everything. After 5 hours of deliberation we found him guilty of all 11 charges. Now it just feels like it will take quite awhile for the nastiness to leave my mind & body. What annoys me is why am I feeling worried about such an old man going to jail, or his wife who was knowledgeable of the offenses being left alone, missing their 60th wedding anniversary etc. It makes no sense but I guess it's a lot different when its actual people rather than just the concept.

On a positive note, I told the two furboys on Thursday morning that mum would need lots of extra attention that night as I was bound to be upset by our final day in court. So Hun-bun who avoids my bed as it is closely guarded Brutus territory has come on the bed with me each night since, lay across me & had a cuddle for about an hour. Bless his little heart, but my 7kg donkey cat is heavy, though I have enjoyed every minute of it & Brutus has let it happen.

Brutus, who always sleeps beside me had his own quirky way of alieviating the tension for me. I went straight to bed when I got home Thursday night & watched episodes of True Blood on DVD to try & stop thinking about it (Vampires always help!). Brutus came up to nap beside me & every time I looked at him he winked at me, which cracked me up. This went on for hours & I even checked his eyes for something irritating them but he was OK. Even now as I type this & am getting upset again, he has come out of the bedroom & is sitting beneath my office chair leaning on my leg. Bless my little fur angels! And thank goodness there is now a rule that you only have to do jury duty every 5 years. I love crime fiction but I really don't want to hear sordid & sad details like that again.

Some nice binding to be stitched later tonight & two more True Blood episodes to watch. Looking forward to a normal, happy work week to come & lots of evening stitching.

Happy stitching

No Photos Mum - I Look Wonky!

My poor little old furboy Brutus had a trip to the vet yesterday. Hence, his not wanting to pose for photos due to his wonky look. The left side of his nose has swollen up, squashing his eye slighting & giving him a decidely lion look from the left hand profile. Hopefully after an injection & a course of antibiotics he may be back to normal.

There is the chance it will be a tooth absess which would mean anesthetc & surgery that at nearly 20 the vets said 'he is unlikely to survive' (inset tears here!).  Being such an old timer it is also common to get tumors too but the vet thinks if that's the case, he won't recover his symmetrical good looks but old age may take him before the tumor does (inset tears here!). Precious little man is looking a little worst for wear & although he has always been a small cat, he is now the grand weight of 3.1 kgs, less than half what his 5 year old brother (the minature donkey) weighs.

Of course, I had kept myself awake half the night before wondering what was wrong with mum's 'little man' & expecting the vet to say, your being unkind, time to let him go (insert tears & shaking here!). However, what the gorgeous young women did say was 'there's still life in him yet!' (inserts lots of tears here!). He's eating & drinking, walking OK with his athritis & has a good purr with his mum most days. So fingers crossed the tablets work & old Brun gets to see his 19th Christmas & hopefully his 20th birthday in April.

The vet asked about getting Brutus as a kitten & then said, 'come this way, I have something to show you'. Bless her heart, she took us in to one of the kennel rooms that currently houses 6 tiny kittens of about 5 weeks old (insert copious tears here!). That was like Christmas for me, having cuddles with all of them & little kittens trying to climb on me while I cried & laughed & told all the furbabies how beautiful they are. They had been dumped at about four weeks old & found in a bin. They were scared & trying to defend themselves when first brought in but after only a week of great care were gentle & sweet already. Hopefully in a few weeks when ready, they will all find a wonderful forever home. After being so scared & sad about little Brun's fate, what a lovely time that was. It was also a gentle reminder that although there will be no replacing my little man when the time comes, there will also be other furbabies in the future needing a good home & in return bringing great joy & love.

So today little Brun is having a lovely day. The vet also cut his claws so no more 'wheelies' on the tiles when he tries to get to a fast trot. No more, click, click, click in the middle of the night either as he decides time for a biccy or two at his favourite snacking time of 3am.

Today I have had a lovely day too. I have done some sewing for my last gift in the Santa Sack Swap, caught up on some work for tomorrow as I have Jury Duty (fingers crossed no long trial for me), did the minimum housework, read blogs, played Words With Friends on Facebook & done some baking.

I have found another benefit that we no longer need a loan or have to go without fabric in order to buy bananas - making banana cake out of the mushy ones. So the night is ending with a big cup of tea, banana cake & watching those poor lost souls on Brideshead Revisited.

I hope your Sunday has been as sweet!

Happy stitching

Update Post Bloggers Block!

Hi all, about time I updated what I have accomplished in April. I have had a bad case of bloggers block for the last week. No posting, no reading, no replying to emails - sorry about that. Don't know what came over me but I did get lots of stitching done.

So here's what I've been up to;

Tis The Season SAL - two more blocks done & the quilt label. I love that I am up to date on this!

Life is Beautiful - three more stitcheries done

Retro Nine Patch - Blocks one & two finished, have two more to do by 15th May to catch up. Can't wait to see how these are used in the finished quilt. It's a mystery......

Vignette Hexie Quilt - 26 hexies done, my new addiction!

That's my ongoing projects covered. I will leave the UFOs & another new project completed for later in the week though there is a peek below.

Little Brun is feeling sad & fragile today. He woke me up this morning with choking noises, foaming mouth & lots of fur ball troubles. For any non cat people, that is fur built up in his tummy from licking in case you were worried that it's a genital problem! My modus operandi when it comes to my fur boys is simple - panic. After 10 minutes of throat & tummy massage & dribble wiping I thought we had a quick trip to the vet needed fast. But while I scrambled in to clothes & fretted about vets being open he wheezed and dealt with things himself by getting up a big, slimy furry bundle deposited for me in the bathroom. Thank goodness!!! Now he is sunning himself on the sewing table, not up to eating yet but has managed some water so doing AOK. A sit on the couch with mum making hexies while watching the latest Harry Potter should bring him back to his normal self. My poor baby...

And on a happy note - thanks very much to Di & Miss Gracie from Quilting is Blissful who sent me a mug rug in the mail as a surprise. It's gorgeous & as I am a fairly new blogger I have missed this addiction but now I have one of my own featuring beautiful bunnies. Precious!

Happy stitching & if life sends you fur balls, may they all be slippery ones!

Here's the full story....
